Beat Generation at the Centre Pompidou

This summer you can get on the road with the Beat Generation in Gallery 1 of the Pompidou Centre. This unprecedented retrospective of the literary and artistic movement that shocked the conservative America of the 50s when it pounded on the doors of convention is presented via a series of audio and visual works. It also embraces the nomadic spirit of this creative movement initiated by William Burroughs, Gregory Corso and Allen Ginsberg in the aftermath of World War II and the early days of the Cold War. At the centre of the exhibition is Jack Kerouac’s legendary On The Road typescript, a 36 metre-long roll of paper. With over 500 artefacts, the exhibition captures the vibrancy of the beat movement and the beginnings of a counter-culture that is still with us today. JR.
